From being so Invincible that nothing can touch you, all the way to level skips and one hit KO’s, today we are taking on Disney’s Aladdin on the Sega Genesis/Megadrive with the help of the Game Genie!

Hello friends it’s Tim here again from Super Mayhem, Awoo, and boy howdy do we have some classic game genie hacking action for you today!

I have a kind of faint memory of having hired Aladdin from the old video store when I was a kid but I never really got into it. I honestly can’t remember if it was the SNES version or if it was the Genesis version, but I do remember kind of throwing apples, dying a lot and kind of getting a bit lost in the game. So today I thought I’d re-visit it with fresh eyes and a new perspective on life plus a bit of game genie hijinx along the way. So explore with me if you will as we take on Disney’s Aladdin for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive!

On with the show!

So before we jump right into the game genie codes, there is actually a controller input you can use without any game modifications that will allow you to access a cheat menu! Simply enter the options menu and press A, C, A, C, A, C, A, C, B(x4). If you do it right you will hear Aladdin say “Yeah!” and the face of the co-developer of Virgin Games David Perry will appear! In this cheat section you can select which level you want to start on, turn on invincibility and even have a kind of free moving screen camera type thing. On my first try of this code I turned everything on at once and sure enough I did have free camera control of the level but I couldn’t work out how to actually proceed with playing the game. I suspect this might have been used for the development of the game but I also may just be lacking the skills to work out how to use it properly. On my second try I just turned the cheat on, aka, invincibility, and straight away found myself getting impaled by a spike and causing Aladdin to look like this. Yes, I giggled way too much at this. Anyway this is a super handy inbuilt cheat system and will definitely help you with the game!

Moving on though, If you enter in the Game Genie code ADWV-YA26 you will have now unlocked Invincibility as well! That’s right, no more will your feet be burned by hot coals, or swish buckling sword wielders! With this awesome code in place you can do whatever you like and without ever having to worry about your health bar or Geanie lamp or whatever it is depleting! This even had an effect in the bonus level at the end of the first level for me where the monkey never took a single hit and I passed the whole thing! It’s a pretty epic code to try for new players like me!

Next up we have a pretty cool code that is HGXB-ZWM8 and with this bad boy enabled you start off the game with 99 apples! But we can take this an epic step further by adding or using the code ATBV-0A5L which gives you infinite apples! Either of these will leave you with a sore shoulder as you will be piffing these red goodies wherever you go! It’s kind of fun!

A much less fun Apple related code is 8JRT-BS8A and if you enter this and try to collect an apple, well you die. See, I told you it was less fun!

Don’t worry though, you can also try the code JTRT-BH8A and when you enter this in whenever you collect an apple you will pass the level! Talk about a trade up! This actually worked too well as I was trying to appreciate the mickey mouse ears on this skeleton in the Sultan’s Dungeon when I found out my sword could also collect apples, so I passed the level. Eh, pretty handy code, unless you want to enjoy the game!

 I was keen to try the code ACRV-YC68 which, like the inbuilt cheat mode, allows you to enable free movement mode! This was pretty cool as I got to scroll around the level and enjoy the graphics and map it out, but then when I found the boss battle I was hoping I could actually try and fight him…the problem arose when I couldn’t get back to normal game mode! I tried every button, disabled the code, tried buttons again but nothing seemed to work! If anyone knows the trick here, if there is one, please let me know in the comments!

Next up I tried the code ACMV-YACL which gives you infinite controllable jump for Aladdin! This is pretty handy as you can just hold down the jump button as long as you like and you will just soar off into the sunset in whatever direction you want! Just don’t hold it too long or you might be waiting a while for him to re-appear. This even worked for Abu in the bonus rounds…so you all got what you came for, a super jumping monkey. You’re welcome.

I also used 2 two line codes (ACMV-YACL + GD9B-ZALJ) + (CM9B-YA5E  + GD9B-ZAPC) that are super helpful when it comes to getting things for free from the peddlers stall. The first one allows you to get all the free lives at the peddlers stall without doing anything and the second one gives you unlimited wishes from the stall. To be honest I am not sure what the wishes do exactly, but I really did enjoy the way you have to press up for Aladdin to receive these gifts, the sprite used is Priceless, it’s like, “Yeahhh give it to me!” It’s neat. It’s just handy to not have to collect all those gems I guess!

Next up I tried the code ABAT-B93L which lets you skip to the next level just by pausing the game and then pressing A! This was sweet as I could get at least a glimpse of the different levels, but my real plan was to get to The Sultan’s Palace, which admittedly could have been done by entering in the 2 line code BLWB-YACN + Z4WB-YAWE but this way I get to show you another code! The main reason I wanted to get here is to use the code R1AV-ZBDA so you can kill the boss Lago in just 1 hit! This level was so confusing to be honest though, even when I added invincibility I still fell in the water and off crazy carpets and such, but ultimately the 1 hit boss kill did work and it was great to see the level design and the art work, even if it was a bit confusing where you could and couldn’t get to.

All in all I have to say I am pretty impressed with how well this game holds up even today! The animation of the characters, the backgrounds and even the music in it are all top notch! Going into this I just kind of remembered this as a weird game where you throw apples, and it kind of is, but now being older and wiser, and with a little help from the game genie I really appreciated it on a whole new level. So If you haven’t played Disney’s Aladdin on the Genesis then maybe give it a go! If nothing else you too will just think it is a weird game where you throw apples.
