Mario Kart Wii is one of those games that just refuses to disappear.
More than 18 years after its original release, the Wii racer still has an incredibly active fanbase, a huge modding scene and plenty of people who swear its drifting mechanics remain some of the best in the series.
Now, fans are taking things one step further.
A project called Wiicompiled is working to bring Mario Kart Wii directly to PC as a native application — without using an emulator like Dolphin.
And that is where things start getting really interesting.
What Is Mario Kart Wiicompiled?
Wiicompiled is a fan-made project led by developer Patchzy that uses a process known as static recompilation.
Normally, if you want to play Mario Kart Wii on a PC, you would use an emulator such as Dolphin. The emulator essentially recreates the Wii hardware in software so your computer can run the original game.
Wiicompiled takes a different approach.
Instead, the original Wii code is translated so that it can run directly on modern PC hardware.
In other words, rather than your PC pretending to be a Nintendo Wii, Mario Kart Wii itself is being adapted to run as a native PC program.
That alone makes this a pretty fascinating project.
You Will Still Need Your Own Copy of Mario Kart Wii
Wiicompiled is not simply distributing Mario Kart Wii as a free PC game.
The developers are keeping Nintendo’s original game data separate from the project, meaning players will need to provide the necessary files from their own copy of Mario Kart Wii.
This is similar to how a number of other fan-made recompilation projects have approached classic games.
Once everything is set up, the goal is to allow Mario Kart Wii to launch directly on Windows without having Dolphin running in the background.
Mario Kart Wii at High Frame Rates
One of the biggest benefits of bringing an older console game natively to PC is the extra performance available from modern hardware.
Early footage of Wiicompiled already looks extremely smooth, and the project is being developed with unlocked frame rates and support for higher resolutions.
That means Mario Kart Wii could potentially be played at frame rates far beyond what the original Wii hardware was capable of delivering.
For a fast-moving racing game, that could make a surprisingly big difference.

Retro Rewind Support Makes Things Even Crazier
Wiicompiled also plans to support Retro Rewind.
If you haven’t come across Retro Rewind before, it is a massive Mario Kart Wii mod and custom track distribution created by ZPL.
It adds more than 200 tracks, drawing from games throughout the Mario Kart franchise along with custom-made circuits, battle arenas and other community creations.
That includes tracks inspired by everything from the original Super Mario Kart through to Mario Kart 7, as well as content based on Mario Kart 8, Mario Kart Tour and the arcade games.
Players who just want the original Mario Kart Wii experience should still be able to play the vanilla game, while Retro Rewind gives the modding crowd a ridiculous amount of extra content to explore.
Yes, AI Was Used
Of course, this is the internet, so there is already some controversy.
The Wiicompiled team has acknowledged using AI tools to assist with parts of the coding process.
That has resulted in plenty of criticism online, with some people dismissing the project as “vibe coded” or suggesting that AI-assisted development could result in bugs and poorly written code.
Importantly, however, this does not mean the game’s artwork, characters or original assets were AI generated.
The discussion is specifically about AI being used as a development tool while working with and translating the game’s code.
Whether that bothers you probably depends on your view of AI-assisted programming in general.
Personally, I think the more important question will be whether the finished project actually works well.
What Could This Mean for Mario Kart Wii Modding?
This may be where Wiicompiled becomes especially exciting.
Mario Kart Wii already has one of the most impressive modding communities surrounding any Nintendo game.
If a reliable native PC version becomes widely available, it could potentially make experimenting with the game even easier.
New tracks, characters, graphical improvements and increasingly ridiculous mods could all become possible as developers learn more about the PC version.
We’ve already seen communities keep games alive for decades through modding, and Mario Kart Wii seems like a perfect candidate for that treatment.
Considering Retro Rewind already lets you drive around an enormous collection of tracks and characters, who knows what the community will come up with next?
When Is Wiicompiled Coming Out?
At the time of writing, Wiicompiled is still being tested through a closed beta, with a wider beta release targeted for August 2026.
There is currently no exact public release date.
That also means the project is still actively being developed, so bugs and other issues should probably be expected while everything is being tested.
Still, what has been shown so far looks extremely promising.
Mario Kart Wii running directly on PC, at high frame rates, with no emulator and support for one of the biggest Mario Kart mod packs ever created?
That’s a pretty wild sentence for a game released back in 2008.
Now we just have to see what happens when everyone gets their hands on it.
Would you play Mario Kart Wii natively on PC, or are you perfectly happy sticking with your Wii or Dolphin? And what do you think about AI being used to help develop projects like this? Don’t forget to subscribe to the youtube channel too!
