Good news, physical game collectors! Nintendo has confirmed it has no plans to abandon physical video games. But does that mean our beloved cartridges are safe forever? Not necessarily!
While the gaming industry continues its march towards an increasingly digital future, Nintendo has offered some welcome reassurance for gamers who still enjoy owning a physical copy of their favourite games.
Speaking at Brasil Game Show 2026, Nintendo executive Bill van Zyll confirmed that the company currently has no plans to discontinue physical games, acknowledging just how much Nintendo fans appreciate them.
And for those of us who grew up collecting NES, SNES and Nintendo 64 cartridges, that’s certainly music to our ears!
But There’s a Catch!
Although Nintendo remains committed to offering physical releases for now, the Nintendo Switch 2 has introduced something rather controversial: Game-Key Cards.
Unlike traditional cartridges, these cards don’t actually contain the full game. Instead, you insert the card and download the game data from the internet.
You can still lend, trade and resell them, but it raises an interesting question:
If the actual game isn’t on the cartridge, is it really a physical game?
And what happens years down the track if those downloads are no longer available?
For retro gaming enthusiasts who value game preservation and collecting, these are questions worth asking.
Are Physical Games Doomed?
Digital downloads are certainly convenient, but there’s something special about owning a physical game.
Whether it’s admiring the box artwork, collecting your favourite Nintendo titles or simply popping a cartridge into a console without needing an internet connection, physical gaming still has plenty of appeal.
Nintendo’s latest comments are encouraging, but “no plans to discontinue physical games” isn’t quite the same as guaranteeing they’ll be around forever!

So, are physical games here to stay, or are they slowly heading for the chopping block?
